Liver Disorder

Jaundice

Jaundice is yellow discoloration of skin and eyes caused by bilirubin accumulation due to excess production, impaired liver processing, or bile flow obstruction.

Overview

Clinical and Ayurvedic guidance for jaundice.

Physiology of Bilirubin and Jaundice

Unconjugated bilirubin from RBC breakdown is processed in liver and excreted in bile. Disruption at any stage increases serum bilirubin.

Types

  • Pre-hepatic

Excess hemolysis increases unconjugated bilirubin load.

  • Hepatic

Liver cell injury impairs bilirubin processing and excretion.

  • Post-hepatic

Bile duct blockage prevents bilirubin outflow.

Causes

  • Liver disease and infections

Hepatitis, cirrhosis, fatty liver, and severe infections can cause jaundice.

  • Hemolytic conditions

Increased RBC breakdown elevates bilirubin production.

  • Biliary obstruction

Gallstones, strictures, and tumors can block bile drainage.

  • Drugs, toxins, and genetic disorders

Medication toxicity and inherited disorders like Gilbert syndrome can contribute.

Ayurvedic Management Notes

Supportive Plan

  • Pitta-pacifying, easy-digest meals with adequate hydration.
  • Avoid alcohol, heavy oils, and high-spice dietary load.
  • Use physician-supervised herbal and detox support.
